Slumdog Millionaire

One of the main and one very important conflict in the film 'Slumdog Millionaire', directed by Danny Boyle, is the conflict between Jamal Malik, the protaginist, and Prem Kumar the game show host of the show 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire'.

The conflict between Jamal and Prem is ongoing throughtout the film. Prem is convinvced that Jamal is cheating because he thinks that a Slumdog without an education couldn't possibly make it through the show. He decides in his mind that Jamal has got to be cheating so he girls the police to question and tourture Jamal into confessing that he cheated. Prem is so fixed on Jamal losing that at one point Prem deliberatly feeds Jamal the incorrect answer. His movtivation for this sabotage is that Prem Kumar is the only person who had won the 20 million rupees on the show and he wishes to being the only person to have done so.

A technique that helps describe the conflict between Jamal and Prem is the visual technique of cimeatography used by the director. One prime example of this was during the game show, just as Jamal had sat down, the camera cut to a "two mid shot" which showed Jamal Jamal and Prem, face to face, as equals. This great shot shows the two about to face off and begin their encounter. Another use of cinematography that helps convey the conflict is an area shot which shows Jamal and Prem in an arena-like setting, almost like a colleseum. This shows that something is about to happen. The third example of cinematography was the intense close up that shows the two, face to face, about to head out to the hot seats, this shows their immediate rivalry.

The acting style and use of dialouge by the two characters in the 'Slumdog Millionaire' shows the obvious conflict between the two. Prem Kumar is an arrogant, sly, rude and sarcastic character who treats Jamal like a total inferior throughout the course of the show. Prem continuesly and mocking calls Jamal a "Chaiwalla" in a very sarcastic and mocking tone, Prem does this to make Jamal feel inferior and beneath him.

The music and sound effects in the film helps the viewers understand the conflict between Jamal and Prem Kumar. One way in which the music shows this is with the well known and esily recognisable "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" tick tocking theme music, this succesfully helps build a high level of demonstration and intensity. It creates a very eeiry enviroment which makes the attentino of the viewers totally on the intense camera angle showing the two going head to head, this partnership of camera angles and sound effects go together to make the conflict between Jamal and Prem very evident to the viewers.

These three features the the director Danny Boyle chose to include in Slumdog Millionaire help to really create conflict between Jamal and Prem. He managed to do this very well and this ongoing conflict makes the film a very enjoyable and exciting film to watch.
